The Lymph System
Q: What is your medical background? In other words, how did you make the discoveries on which your book is based?
A: I've studied natural hygiene for 30 years. It's a little-known field, but has a 190-year written history! I also have a Ph.D. in nutritional science.
The basis of nutritional hygiene is keeping the lymphatic system operating well. It's THE key to good health. Here's a personal experience I'd like to share.
When I was 21, in 1966, I was in Vietnam. I was exposed to Agent Orange on many occasions. Now, I have peripheral neuropathy, which means both of my legs have a limp, and I have limited use of my arms and hands.
The reason I tell you this is: I am the longest-known survivor with this condition. The average lifespan after exposure to Orange is five years after deterioration -- and for me it's been 15 years. Agent Orange has to be in the body for 20 years before it begins to deteriorate.
In 1970, I learned about the lymph system, and how I could clean it to lose weight and clear up other conditions. All the effort I made literally saved my life. The message I want to spread is this: If I can battle Agent Orange and live, YOU can be disease-free.
Q: Can you give us the "Reader's Digest condensed version" of what those steps are?
A: Yes! You take your car to get its oil changed four times per year, to cleanse it of waste, right? Well, that's exactly what you need to do to the lymphatic system at the beginning of each season.
For at least seven days, eat and drink NOTHING but fresh fruits and juices, and fresh vegetables and vegetable juices.
Now, that's a very basic, thumbnail sketch: but, by eating uncooked food for seven days, the body is able to use the energy it saves to break down and remove wastes.
You just have to try it once or twice, and you'll have all the evidence you need!
Q: I'm a diabetic. Would this plan still work for me, since eating a lot of fruits and juices is required?
A: To be honest, diabetes is the most complicated disease that can afflict the human body. There are so many variables involved for each case. So, I can't say for sure without a history of your experiences.
As for blood sugar regulation, though, my experience is that blood sugar will normalize, because when you clean the lymph system, you allow all mechanisms of the body to normalize.
Q: What kind of fruit and veggies should be eaten -- without sending us to the bathroom every hour?
A: Well, the effect you hope for on this plan IS to go to the bathroom every hour. Think of it like this: If you want to clean something, you clean it with water, right? That's what we need to do to the inside of our bodies.
So, yes, a person will urinate more frequently, and may even have an initial case of diarrhea, which may last for 24 hours. But that will subside, and remember, this kind of cleansing is a good thing!
Q: When I was younger, your plan worked really well for me. Now that I'm older, it doesn't seem to work as well. The weight just doesn't want to come off! Help!
A: Maybe your body doesn't want to lose any more weight. When your body is fed correctly, it'll even out at a weight point that's healthiest for it.
Try to focus on FEELING good and positive and healthy, and the body will follow suit according to its own dictates. Trying a weeklong fruit and veggie fast might help you break through a plateau, though
Q: If one has constant constipation, do you suggest eating only fruit for seven days? If so, what kind of fruit?
A: Well, in a word, yes. And you can eat any type of fruit that appeals to you, but it must be fresh! When it comes to juice, no concentrates!
Q: What recommendations do you have for someone who lost 25 pounds, and then regained all of it?
A: Diets don't work because they're temporary. Ninety percent of all weight loss is regained in 60 days! The reason that the original Fit for Life has sold 12 million copies is because it teaches you to stop dieting and to begin a way of eating for life.
You really do have to eat correctly for a lifetime -- and this can be done without depriving or restricting oneself. I'm a foodaholic myself!
Q: Harvey, I met you about 18 years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter, and when she was born, the doctors said she was the cleanest baby they had ever seen! Thanks!
A: You're very welcome, and congratulations! Similarly, my son was born after only 45 minutes. The midwife said the same thing: In her 17 years, she'd never seen a cleaner birth.
